Solid Structures

Section B1, Solid Structures, provides integral investigations and expert opinions on solid structures used in waterways engineering and on bridges.

The Section assesses the serviceability and load-bearing capacity of existing structures and develops observation procedures (e.g. monitoring) and technically optimised proposals for strengthening. After producing an inventory of findings and damages, the structure is analysed in order to determine the load-bearing capacity and the safety level. These analyses integrate results from geotechnical and construction material related investigations. If necessary, testing methods, such as load tests or in-situ measurements, are initiated, or non-destructive testing methods applied.

For new construction projects and extensive repair work of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), Section B1 provides construction consultancy services by carrying out feasibility studies and optimising designs. This work also involves assessing the suitability of innovative construction methods.

From this broad range of tasks, fundamental issues arise and solutions are sought in the context of practice-focused R&D projects.
