Research at the BAW
As waterways engineering consultant and expert, the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute supports the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) in the development and construction and the operation and maintenance of the waterways in Germany.
Excellent research and development services are essential so that the BAW can support the tasks of the BMVBS and the WSV in regard to the waterways reliably and with foresight in view of the complex professional and political tasks and the rapid progress of scientific knowledge. The research by the BAW is carried out with the aim of continually improving and expanding its own advisory performances, thereby making a decisive contribution to the development of the waterways as a safe, sustainable and innovative mode of transport.
The work of the BAW in the field of departmental research and development is accompanied by an independent scientific advisory board. This board accompanies and supports the BAW in the planning and evaluation of its R&D activities. The scientific advisory board is made up of external representatives of the various scientific disciplines covered by the work of the BAW and of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS), the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) and the research commissioners of the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
