Ground investigation and testing
Advice for planning and carrying out investigations into ground conditions and earthwork materials both in the field and in the laboratory is provided in the sections G1 "Ground Investigation and Testing" and K1 "Geotechnical Engineering North". The tasks encompass carrying out and evaluating soil-mechanical laboratory tests, devising field tests and geotechnical measurements, as well as setting up and operating geotechnical model experiments. The range of services also includes maintenance, full or on-going development of geotechnical laboratory and field equipment and the corresponding measuring system. The creation, updating and on-going development of IT programs for geotechnical testing are a further focus of corresponding work activities.
Soil and rock samples are looked after from receipt of the samples at BAW via the corresponding geotechnical laboratory tests through to archiving. In addition to the standardized laboratory tests, model tests are also carried out, as well as special experiments derived from empirical experience or newly experiments developed in individual cases. To this end, corresponding technical infrastructure, beyond the normal standard found in a geotechnical laboratory is kept available. In-situ measurements and field tests are also indispensable in geotechnical testing, including all the corresponding planning, implementation and recording.
