Methods

The methods used in the hydraulic modelling and for modelling the waterway systems with multi-dimensional mathematical models warrant a structured, information-assisted work process where the necessary observation and simulation data are obtained, processed, managed and evaluated without discontinuity of media. The evaluation of field study measurements and model data aims in particular to extract the key information from what is often a very large quantity of data by means of characteristics analysis. These characteristics permit the comparison and classification of the status of the waterway systems and can also be used for predicting probable future developments. The method base developed in the BAW is supplemented by research and development projects and extended with reference to new specific issues. At the moment for example, work is in progress to include methods for ship handling simulation.

Mathematical methods
Numerics

Mathematical methods can be used to obtain results about natural processes (simulation). They also permit predictions of natural developments and the impact of anthropogenic intervention in natural systems. The central simulation methods are supplemented by methods of data processing and grid generation (preprocessing), as well as visualizing and analysing the calculation results (postprocessing).

Hydraulic modelling
Studies on sediment transport in a laboratory channel (5 m x 30 m, movable bed, Qmax = 550 l/s)

In the BAW, representational models are an important method for dealing with various different hydraulic issues relating to the federal waterways. For inland areas, the focus is on complex aspects of spatial current processes and the transport of solid particles, while the issues involved in coastal areas mainly refer to ship dynamic parameters in the context of the interaction between seagoing ships and tidal fairways with corresponding model analysis.

Field study measurements
Navigational dynamic measurements in the mountainous stretch of the River Rhine at low water in August 2003

Special field studies are carried out, in order to obtain generally high quality data for calibration and validation of the implemented model and computation methods, thus enhancing their accuracy and forecasting ability.

Ship handling simulation
Ship handling simulator in BAW Karlsruhe

The Hydraulic Engineering in Coastal Areas department of the BAW advises the WSD North and WSD Northwest among others in the context of fairway design with regard to adapting the shipping channels to large vessels (e.g. Lower and Outer Elbe, Lower Weser, Outer Weser, also the approaches to Stralsund and the Peenestrom).

Design software
Start screen of the GBBSoft software

Design software is used for applying a practical application of recommendations and computation methods for example from regulations and bulletins to waterways engineering and hydraulic engineering in inland areas. As a rule, design software combines theoretical and empirical approaches with the results of practical experience. Together with computing results for various loading scenarios, they it intends to provide the user with a dimensioning proposal for his specific problem.
