Expert reports on large-scale waterways engineering measures drawn up by the BAW are subject to sometimes very detailed critical assessment and responses by parties raising objections during public works planning procedures. Moreover, there is a growing tendency for objecting parties to commission scientific institutions and experts in Germany and abroad to fault the expert reports drawn up by the BAW.

Die Seemänner der Nordsee fühlten sich wohl angesichts der prägnanten Seitenansicht des Gewässerschutzschiffs NEUWERK an die Silhouette eines Bügeleisens erinnert, als sie den skipperinternen 'Ruf'-Namen für das bemerkenswerte Schiff vergaben.

A criterion for a smooth flow of traffic is the existence of coastal waterways which fulfil the necessary standards in a safe manner. Whether in development or maintenance issues, or economical dimensioning and navigability in the region of the tidal estuaries and the German Baltic coast - the Hamburg Office of the BAW provides reliable advisory services to the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV).
