Shipbuilding

The Ship Technology section is located in Hamburg. As the BAW's competence centre for shipbuilding it is responsible for tasks related to the development and construction of civilian watercraft and special purpose ships on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV). We advise the BMDV, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) on all aspects of ship technology, especially with regard to planning and/or new construction and replacement. Moreover, we provide cooperative administrative assistance to other federal authorities in this field.

Special purpose ships perform a wide range of tasks in the fields of maritime emergency preparedness, pilotage, marine and fisheries research, marine environmental monitoring, sea surveying and wreck searches or in connection with the work and tasks of the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV). In view of these very specific and complex tasks, the requirements for the planning and building of new, sustainable multi-purpose and working ships or research vessels are high.

We monitor and support the construction of new special purpose ships, from the initial technical conception through to preparation of the required specifications, the tender procedure and final handover to the operator. If required, we assume responsibility for conducting the public tender procedures, including the awarding of the contract to the contractor, i.e. the shipyard. During the construction phase the Ship Technology section is responsible for construction supervision, examines and accepts the technical documentation required for construction execution on behalf of the client and supervises the execution of the construction works and all related payment milestones. The new special purpose ship is handed over to the operator after all tests and acceptance procedures have been completed, including sea trial.
